Bandalong Litter Trap

The Bandalong Litter Trap is a floating device installed at strategic locations along waterways to collect and retain floating litter, vegetation and other debris. The system operates silently without any mechanical assistance, capturing and retaining debris ready for removal and disposal. Bandalong Litter Traps are suitable for most waterways wider than 2 metres, including waterways subject to tidal action, rivers, streams, channels and open bodies of water.

Models

The ‘CBD’ version is approximately 4 metres long x 2 metres wide with the collection booms normally 3 metres long. The ‘standard’ version is approximately 9 metres long x 3 metres wide. The collection booms at the front of the unit can vary in length but are usually 3 metres or 6 metres long. Litter trap dimensions can be varied to suit the specifics of the installation site. The Bandalong Litter Trap system is a flexible product range and our innovative engineers will work with the site design team to develop an optimal solution to meet your requirements.

How It Works

The Bandalong Litter Trap floats on waterways, given buoyancy by exceptionally strong and durable polyethylene pipes. The unit is held in place by galvanised chains attached to ground anchors or fitted to rider poles for canal installations. Outspread collection booms direct floating litter through a one-way mesh gate into the trap where it is retained ready for removal. Re-entrainment is prevented by a system of counterweights and paddles that close the entry gate when the water flow ceases or there is a change in flow direction due to tide or wind. A 150mm polyethylene side skirt beneath the waterline prevents debris from escaping from under the main floats.

Benefits

  • Debris is directed via collection booms through a patented one way flap or gate to capture floating litter and debris.
  • Cost effective and requires little maintenance
  • Operates silently 24 hours a day without mechanical assistance.
  • Does not impede water flow or cause upstream flooding.
  • Security fittings used to reduce vandalism.
  • Debris cannot be dislodged once trapped.
  • Quality, durable and corrosion resistant materials used.

Testimonials

"A Bandalong Litter Trap was installed in the Hobart Rivulet, a large catchment that runs through central Hobart. The trap has captured significant volumes of litter and debris that would of otherwise polluted the receiving waterways of the Derwent Estuary. The Bandalong Litter Trap has contributed to improving the health of Hobart's Waterways" - Derwent Estuary Program, Tasmania Australia.

"Prototype litter traps were trialed on Melbourne's Yarra River and the Bandalong Floating Litter Trap was the most successful" - Park Notes, Parks Victoria, Australia

Bandalong Boom System

The Bandalong Boom System is installed across waterways, acting as a final barrier to collect or deflect debris. The floating boom sections are coupled together and spanned across a weir, waterway or dam to capture litter and prevent it from floating further downstream.

How It Works

Floating boom sections are coupled together to span across waterways. The boom sections are manufactured from exceptionally strong and durable polyethylene pipe. They are equipped with anti-vandal fittings and have a rubber sleeve over the joint to stop any litter escaping through the joint section. An aluminium mesh skirt under the bottom of the pipe traps any submerged litter or logs.

Quotation

Bandalong Litter Traps and Boom Systems are custom designed for each location to suit the specific site conditions.

Installation

The Bandalong system can be tailored to suit the individual requirements of your waterway management plan. Installation is quick and easy. Most components are pre-assembled offsite and installation can usually be completed within a day. Substantial earthworks, construction and reinstatement works are not required therefore disruption to services is avoided. The chains and anchors required to hold the system in place can be located below ground.

Benefits

  • Boom sections are manufactured from strong and durable polyethylene pipe.
  • Sections can be coupled together to span across varying widths of waterways.
  • Aluminium skirt sections can be fitted to prevent litter escaping under boom system.
  • Couplings have security screws to help reduce vandalism.
  • Rubber sleeves are used over our unique flexible universal joint to allow for movement between booms.
